Like a campfire, inspiration starts with a single spark that grows into a flame. As an Eagle Scout, BJ knew firsthand just how important cultivating a sense of leadership and confidence will be for kids as they grow into adulthood. "Scouting gave me lessons, values, and experiences that I still carry with me today, and I felt a strong pull to give back to the program that gave me so much. More than that, I wanted the kids in my community to have the same life-changing opportunities I had—the chance to discover their strengths, try new adventures, and grow into confident, capable leaders."
It's this passion for encouraging Scouts to flourish that keeps BJ going with the program. "You get to see the spark in their eyes the first time they camp out under the stars, cook a meal over a fire, hit the bullseye on the shooting range, or even just stand up to lead their den for the first time. Those moments might seem small, but you know they’re building confidence, independence, and memories that will last a lifetime. Being there to encourage them and celebrate those milestones is an honor."
Understanding that the small moments lead to much greater life impacts is what "being the spark" is all about. Scouting without its adult volunteers wouldn't be the same, and it is through volunteers like BJ, that communities are able to come together to make sure youth feel valued and capable of becoming great leaders in their futures.
