Pushmobile is a relay race using simple, homemade, Cub Scout-powered cars. Cub Scout dens make their own pushmobile. Four to eight youth work together as a team to push their pushmobile through the course to the finish line. The purpose of this event is to have fun, promote participation in a team effort, and to provide an activity where doing your best is most important. Medals for top teams per rank and trophies for top three packs will be presented.

Registration

Teams are formed by Scout rank (kindergarten - 5th grade), often organized by dens. Teams need to be a minimum of four Scouts. The ideal team size is eight Scouts. Teams with less than eight Scouts may add Scouts from other ranks (as long as they are a lower grade) or packs. Every Scout will receive a patch. Registration is $8 per Scout. There is no onsite registration.

The pack trackside location is awarded in order of payment.

Registration is completed by the pack leaders; parents may register individually if the pack/den is not attending. Registration is completed online with a credit card or electronic check. There is no onsite registrationCouncil refund policy.

Why is pushmobile such a great event?

  • Pushmobile races help the Scouts learn to work together as a team and having fun.
  • We have lots of trophies to hand out to Scouts!
  • We have lots of activities for the Scouts and siblings to do during the day as well. Some activities count towards advancements, special awards, and some are just for fun! All activities are included in the registration fee!
  • Food will be sold at the event.
  • Bring your entire family! Sorry, no pets though.
  • This is a great recruiting event for your den or your pack! Have Scouts invite a friend to attend and be part of a fun Cub Scout event. 

What to Bring

  • Copy of Activity Consent Form, for every youth participant (ages 21 and under)
  • Annual Health and Medical Record (Part A & B for any Scouting event) for every person attending
  • Bike helmets (one per Scout required); chinstraps are recommended
  • Pushmobile (one per den)
  • Scouts are encouraged to wear their field (Scout) uniform or activity (any Scout t-shirt) uniform
  • Long pants or knee pads are recommended 
  • Closed-toed shoes appropriate for running
  • Hat
  • Appropriate clothing for any weather (e.g., rain gear, jacket)
  • Insect repellent
  • Sunscreen
  • Water
  • Optional: money for the concession stand; 5-gallon bucket for Scouts to sit on; chairs for adults

Tentative Schedule

Times are approximate. Start times are flexible. If one rank finishes early, the next rank will race. Teams should be ready to race ahead of schedule.

Awards

Medals will be awarded throughout the day between races. Trophies will be presented to the top three teams per rank and to top three packs.

Rules

  • pushmobillePlease have fun because it’s all about the Scouts
  • Each pack must provide at least two volunteers to help on race day (inspecting, manning stop boxes, stopwatch keepers, etc...)
  • Teams must have 4 to 8 Scouts with any borrowed Scouts coming from younger ranks. Tiger teams must have a minimum of four Tigers.
  • Each team member must push and ride at least once
  • Each team completes eight 25-yard runs per race with stops at the end of each 25 yards where the scouts switch positions
  • A pushmobile must come to a complete stop at the end of each 25 yards before the switch occurs
  • At the end of the fourth 25-yard section, the pushmobile will be turned around 180 degrees and raced back to the start/finish line
  • Seat belts and long pants are recommended.
  • Pushmobiles must pass inspection to race. Pre-event inspections will be planned or can be scheduled and are recommended.
  • Scouts must help build the pushmobile. 
  • Pushmobiles must be made of wood except for the wheels, axles, rope and attachment hardware.
  • Pushmobiles must stand upright without assistance and have four wheels that touch the ground at all times.
  • Wheels must have an outer diameter between 4” and 12.”  
  • Brakes are recommended for faster stopping.
  • The minimum distance between wheels on the same axle is 32.”
  • A functional seat with a backrest must be incorporated in the pushmobile and be no higher than 18” above the ground.
  • A fixed push bar made from wood must be permanently attached.
  • No engines or gears or other means of mechanical locomotion are permitted and steering ability should be very limited.
  • After the pushmobile pass inspection, they will be parked in pits and off limits to the teams until they are brought to the starting area.
  • A pushmobile may not be shared between dens with the same rank.
  • Coaches are not allowed to touch the cars or scouts or to leave their position once the race has begun! No one is allowed in the race lanes except for the Scouts in that race.
  • A one-second penalty will be assessed for pushmobiles not staying in the lane, for Scouts leaving their relay position, and for any other infractions.
  • Protests must be brought to the race director and the decision of the race director is final.
  • Helmets are required; chinstraps are recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if we do not have enough for a team?

If you have a pushmobile car, we will find racers. If you have racers and no pushmobile car, then we will find you a pushmobile car.  

I don't think we can race because...

There is nothing we cannot help you cannot overcome. If there is a special need, then we will work with the team or Scout. This is NOT the event to miss for any reason!!! Contact us and let us tell you how we will make this event work for you and your Scout. 

My pack or den is not participating, can my child still race?

Absolutely! We prefer everyone sign-up as a team first, but we understand that not everyone can make it to the race. So, sign-up as an individual after you have exhausted all other options of finding a team and let us find a team for you. 

I have an idea for pushmobile that might make a great activity for the Scouts. Who do I contact?

Contact the activities coordinator that will be handling all of these activities for our Scouts and siblings to enjoy while they are waiting for their race.

Scouting Safely

Safety is Your Responsibility posterScouting America's Commitment to Safety is ongoing, and the safety of our youth, volunteers, staff, and employees cannot be compromised. Scouting America puts the utmost importance on safe and healthy environments for its youth membership. The Sam Houston Area Council takes great strides to ensure the safety of its youth as well as the adult volunteer leadership that interacts with them. 

Guide to Safe Scouting policies must be followed. All participants must follow youth protection guidelines at all Scouting events. Highlights include:

  • Two-deep leadership on all outings is required.  
  • One-on-one contact between adults and youth members is prohibited. 
  • The buddy system should be used at all times. 
  • Discipline must be constructive.

Health and safety must be integrated into everything we do, to the point that no injuries are acceptable beyond those that are readily treatable by Scout-rendered first aid. As an aid in the continuing effort to protect participants in Scout activities, the National Health and Safety Committee and the Council Services Division of the National Council has developed the SAFE Checklist of safety procedures for physical activity. These points, which embody good judgment and common sense, are applicable to all activities. 

*About Medical Record: Scouting America requires all participants to bring an Annual Health and Medical Record to every Scouting event. The Scouting adventures, camping trips, and having fun are important to everyone in Scouting—and so is your safety and well-being. Completing the Annual Health and Medical Record is the first step in ensuring you have a great Scouting experience. Completing a health history promotes health awareness, collects necessary data, and provides medical professionals with critical information needed to treat a patient in the event of an illness or injury. It also provides emergency contact information. Please download the form and have it with you at all Scouting events for every member of your family.  

^Closed-toed shoes are highly recommended for all Scouting events. Many of our outdoor venues have snakes and sticks that can injure toes. Many of our activities include active games, so shoes that Scouts can run in (e.g., tennis shoes) are recommended.
